Virtual Action Learning and virtual facilitator training

We offer all our programmes, sets and courses virtually. On top of the usual benefits of action learning, virtual action learning offers sets the opportunity to save time, money and connect across long distances. Virtual facilitator training has been one of our offering for many years.

If you are working with people in different locations, nationally or globally, virtual action learning and virtual facilitator training can be a no-brainer

We have been training teams and facilitators in virtual action learning for many years before the Covid-19 pandemic, and so we are well-established as leaders in the field of using action learning remotely.

We also help leaders and facilitators to develop their virtual facilitation skills – see here.

I really enjoyed the virtual approach. It was great to be able to connect with others in different countries and across sectors, and to do this with a lower carbon footprint.

What are the benefits of virtual action learning?

Virtual action learning brings all the benefits of traditional, in-person action learning, plus:

With video conferencing now so well-established, many of our clients now prefer to work in this way.

A bit of history

We’ve been doing action learning virtually for many years. In this video you can see our team talking about virtual action learning back in 2015 – how it worked, and the benefits and challenges, before video conferencing was widespread. Today, our virtual work usually uses video conferencing, so set members can see each other’s facial expressions and body language.

I was struck by how quickly the set, with the support of a skilled facilitator, built an intimate rapport. It is a really effective method of delivering accelerated and sustainable learning

What are the downsides of virtual action learning?

There are surprisingly few downsides to using action learning virtually. We find that participants feed back with just the same level of enthusiasm and the impact and outcomes we measure are just as compelling. Some sets much prefer working in this way.

Then there are the additional benefits of working virtually, described above.

That said, there is a power to being in the room together physically. A connection can sometimes be felt between people in a different way. People enjoy it and have time to connect informally in the breaks or work on other projects in person while they are in the same place. The time taken to travel to a physical venue allows people to clear their minds and be fully present in the action learning space.

If you’re unsure if you want to set up your action learning sets or action learning facilitator training virtually or face-to-face, talk to us. The pros and cons of each option will depend on the specifics of your work and the outcomes you want to achieve.
